Bamburi
Forest Trails (Northern Quarry)
Escape to our tranquil and cool Forest Trails and you can
loose yourself in the beautiful surrounds of a lush environment that
just a few years ago was a barren landscape, stripped of all fauna and
flora.
Located in the North Quarry, the Forest Trails cover a wide
area of the Bamburi Quarries, some already rehabilitated whilst sections
are still barren and in the early stages of reforestation, thus giving
the visitor a clear and precise image and understanding of the process
and enormity of the rehabilitation task.
Butterfly
Pavillion
Constructed in the shape of a butterfly, the Butterfly
Pavilion houses over 12 variety of Kenyan butterflies. Here the visitor
can explore every stage of the butterfly life cycle: from pupa to adult.
There is also a nursery where plants are grown specifically for
caterpillar feeding. Guides, with in-depth knowledge of these creatures
and their life cycle, will explain the whole breeding process to you and
convert you to a butterfly admirer with ease.
Walking
The Leisure Walk invites for quiet walks through an ever
changing landscapes, from empty quarries to lush forest, lakes and small
streams, palm groves, and plantations of indigenous timber trees. It is
marked with yellow rings on trees and poles. One ring marks the shortest
route, additional rings show detours which increase the walking distance
or lead to special attractions. Small boards set up along the way
explain concepts and practices. Benches put along the way invite the
visitors to relax in the peace and quiet of the quarry-turned-forest, or
observe the ways and webs of life in the man-made ecosystem.
Mountain
Biking
The 8.3 km cycling route leads one through the lush, green
Casuarina Forest to marvel at the awesome Baobab Tree and the various
stages of the rehabilitation as well as the original bush land with its
rich and varied bird life. Lucky cyclists may meet the domesticated
eland herd on their way to or from the pasture.
The cycling route is marked with red rings on trees and poles. Mountain
bikes are available for hire.
Jogging
Like the leisure walk and the cycling trails, the Jungle
Jogging route is a fascinating adventure through the ever changing
forest environment that comprises the North Quarry. The route is marked
clearly with blue markers, ensuring that people are always kept on track
and are able to enjoy the experience of jogging through the lush forest.
There is always the chance that you may see a small antelope, rare bird
or reptile - keep your eyes peeled and your fitness excursion may become
a wonderful nature adventure. Take in the beauty of the small lakes, the
lush palm forests and the wooded areas alongside the paths. The Jungle
jogging trail is 3.2 km long and follows a different route to the
leisure walk and the cycling trail.
Specialised Tours
Any manner of specialised tours can be arranged within the
confines of the North Quarry - birding tours, sunset BBQ's or cocktails
parties in secluded areas of the quarry, guided walking tours - the
staff at Baobab Farm are able to pander to the whim of even the most
discerning client - whether it be a couple or a group of 50 people. The
only criteria for such tours is that we are notified of the requirements
in advance so that the necessary planning can be done to ensure a
memorable and wonderful experience. Other aspects of the Baobab
Adventure may be linked to the activities of the Forest Trails to make
your experience of the Baobab Farm complete and all encompassing.
