chovné centrum dvou druhů želv obrovských, které
byly považovány za vyhubené v roce 1840 až do jejich
znovuobjevení v roce 1995 -
Dipsochelys hololissa (Seychelská želva obrovská, oficiální
český název želva nemá) a Dipsochelys arnoldi (želva
obrovská Arnoldova, oficiální český název želva nemá)*1.
Oba druhy se začali množit v roce 2002 a ke konci roku 2009 bylo
odchováno 140 želv Arnoldových a 48 želv seychelských. Prvních 5 želv
Arnoldových již bylo dokonce i vypuštěno (2006) do přírody
ostrova Silhouette, kde kdysi žily. Další reintrodukce budou
následovat v roce 2010.
Centrum také množí ohrožené seychelské bahenní želvy: pelusie (tereky) kaštanové a pelusie (tereky) tmavé. *1v roce 1995 se v
zahradě jednoho hotelu na Mahé našla želva, o níž se
spekulovalo, že by to mohla být jedna ze dvou vyhubených druhů.
Srovnání se starými muzejními druhy potvrdilo identifikaci. Když
se domněnka potvrdila, byly testům podrobeny i další želvy,
kterých je po hotelových zahradách spousta. Bylo nalezeno celkem
6 ks obou druhů a v roce 1997 byly všechny tyto želvy
získány a převezeny do nového chovného centra na Silhouette.
Později proběhly podobné testy i v některých zoo a bylo objeveno
ještě několik málo samců.

*1. Both species
started breeding and by the end of 2009 140 Arnold's tortoises
and 48 Seychelles giant tortoises had been produced. First 5 Arnold's turtles
have even been reintroduced (2006) to the wild of Silhouette
island, where they once lived. Further reintroductions will take
place in 2010.
The centre also breed the threatened Seychelles terrapins, Yellowbellied mud turtle and East African mud turtle. *1 a tortoise found in
the garden of a hotel on Mahé in 1995, found a turtle was
speculated to be one of the two supposedly extinct species.
Comparison with old museum specimens confirmed the
identification. A total of 6 of each species were found and in
1997 these were collected and transferred to a new breeding
centre on Silhouette. Later,
similar tests were carried out in some zoos and a
few males were found.
Návštěvníkům je předveden projekt, vyprávění o historii želv a
ukázány nejmladší želvy. NPTS také provádí výzkumné a záchranné
projekty různých dalších druhů zvířat.
