History of the Bird Park |
|
|
From what began purely as a life-long, cherished hobby, the late Jannie
La Grange and his wife Lettie opened the J A La Grange Birdpark in
Boksburg in 1975.
The late Jannie La
Grange, a one-time pigeon-racer and private bird keeper used to keep a
collection of birds at home and noticed that more and more of his
friends and their friends in turn would visit the house in order to look
at his birds, hence the idea to open a bird park.
At the La Grange Bird
Park you'll be able to experience an impressive collection of
extraordinary birds, both exotic and indigenous. There's a huge
selection of exotic parrots and waterfowl from all over the globe. The
more unusual inhabitants of the park would have to be the Great White
Pelicans, Marabou Storks, Cassowarry and Eagle Owls. By watching these
wonderful creatures you won't only learn more about them but also feel
the calmness and peace as they gracefully wonder about.
The Blue Crane, the
national bird of South Africa is an almost extinct specie. They inhabit
grasslands all over our continent, but due to poaching for either the
pot or various trades, their numbers are not what it should be. These
beautiful "blue" birds also strut their stuff in the park, together with
the closely related African Crowned Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes.
It is truly a mindblowing
experience. Flamingo pink and Amazon green, the hugeness of the Ostrich
and Emu alike. The laugh of the Kookaburra and the chattering of
Lorikeets. The beauty of the Swan oppose to the "hobo-like" appearance
of the Marabou Stork.
Each bird in the La
Grange Bird Park's care is rightfully given the room to grow and obtain
their own personality.
