Brief history of the Butterfly World |
|
|
The idea of creating a Tropical Butterfly Park originated when the owner
Matty Pretorius (now retired) saw a similar concept in Canada in 1992.
When she returned home from her trip she approached her daughter Esther
van der Westhuizen (owner of Butterfly World Tropical Garden) to
research and develop a tropical butterfly display in or near Cape Town.
At that stage Esther was a lecturer in Zoology @ the University of the
Western Cape (UWC).
In 1995 Esther left UWC
and in the following two years mother and daughter worked tirelessly to
develop and build Butterfly World which opened on the 6 November 1996.
The original Butterfly Park was developed into an extensive tropical
garden with many attractions connected to the tropical biome.
Today- not only
butterflies are housed at the facility. Many small vertebrates
conforming to the tropical theme (birds, reptiles, fish, etc.) and
invertebrates (spiders, insects, etc.) also find a home here.
