About Miskolc Zoo |
|
|
Written records prove that in the valley of Csanyik there was a royal
wild animal park in 1355. It means that this place has the longest
history of animal keeping in Hungary. The zoo was opened in 1983 and the
21-acre park can be found in a hornbeam-oak forest. The territory of the
zoo is connected to the Bükk National Park so we can show you the
diverse flora of the Bükk mountains. We can assure you that your visit
in the zoo will be a pleasant forest trip.
Miskolc Zoo is one of the city’s most popular attractions
that is visited by 100 000 people every year. Currently we have 700
animals of almost 150 species. Besides the European fauna you can find
here some exotic animals as well. If you don’t know what an aratinga, a
coati, a peccary, a colobus, a guanaco, a hucul, or a caracal is, but
you would like to know then you should definitely come and meet them and
their friends. You will also meet Gabi the bear, Zeno the Bengal tiger
and her two offsprings, the panther family, the group of meercats,
ostriches, emus, wallabies, wolves, deer, parrots, monkeys and many
more. Our aim is to inform you about the variety of species and
biodiversity of the animal world.
We are placing the animals according to their natural habitat
to be able to show you the flora and fauna of the continents. Their
cages and places allow you to see their natural behavior. We have just
removed many of the iron bars and made the homes of the animals
friendlier with safety units so while in our zoo you will forget about
the unnatural boundaries between you and the animals.
We find zoo pedagogy very important. Our slogan is: Closer to
the animals, closer to nature. It means that the Miskolc Zoo is changing
not only in its looks but also in its mentality. Besides the guided
tours we have zoo classes for schools, using the animals as ‘live visual
aids’. Our specialties are those shows where you can touch the animals
and the chance to ride a horse. There is a fenced area where some
species can be petted.
