salvami.
there is not many information about the menagerie in Kitay-gorod.
It existed probably sometime in the 17th century (or maybe already at
the end of the 16th) at the outer side of wall of the fort of
Kitay-gorod (in the place of today's Polytechnical Museum). It is known
mainly due to two incidents... The whole menagerie was wooden (which was
normal at the time) and in one wooden building there was also elephant.
Once at spring, the elephant got angry and ripped out of the wall the
beam, to which was chained and began to destroy the menagerie. Enraged
by roar of the crowd it tried to tear from other chains. When he
succeeded and hurtled towards the crowd, the police arrived with a
company of soldiers (the police also with that name existed in Russia
since mid of the 15th cent.). They killed the elephant with several
salvos. The elephant had 144 bullets in the body. More than 4 tons of
meat and over quintal of lard was from him - Muscovites ate up
everything.
The second incident was with the hyena... Once during night, it escaped,
ran through nearly the entire Mjasnickaya street, invaded to the
territory of Nicholas Church and killed a bell-ringer. It is not known
when menagerie ceased to exist, but already in the 19 century an animal
market stood in that place. |
