Zahradu
projektoval francouzský architekt Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond a
Němec Johan Friedrich Braunstein. Na začátku zde byly jen labutě a
vzácné druhy vodních ptáků. 1722 italský architekt Nicola Machetti
postavil dvě voliéry - západní a východní. Obě voliéry (či ptačince)
byly stejné - dřevěné dvanáctihranné besídky s kopulí a věžičkou
uprostřed a měděnými pozlacenými klecemi uvnitř. Stěny byly obložené
tufem, skořápkami měkkýšů a struskou. Vnitřní stěny byly vyzdobeny
malbou mýtických lovců - Diany a Aktaióna od francouzského malíře Luise
Caravaque.
tzv. Yagdgarten (z německého Jagdgarten) nebo Velký či Jelení zvěřinec -
v místě pozdější Alexandrie. V roce 1737 sem nechala císařovna dovést z
Izmajlovského zvěřince množství německých jelenů (jeleni pocházející od
pruských králů) a maralů, 16 divokých koz, 4 divočáky, 1 vlka, 374
zajíců, 68 divokých kachen a 16 "velkých mořských ptáků".
milovala lov, sokolnictví a zvířecí souboje (medvědi s vlky nebo jeleni
s divočáky)... Její lásce k lovu odpovídala i druhová skladba zvěřince -
tisíce slavíků, stehlíků, pěnkav, hýlů, čížků, strnadů a dalších pěvců.
Naopak lov nebyl vůbec důležitý pro Kateřinu II. Velmi snížila počet
zvířat, zůstalo jen pár krotkých jelenů, srnců apod. V roce 1742
přivezla i bílé jeleny. Císař Mikuláš I. také nebyl zaníceným lovcem. V
roce 1826 zvěřinec přemístil do Anglického parku a poté postavil
bažantnici. 1829 nakoupil stovky jelenů (hlavně sobů). 1834 zde zůstalo
jen 42 srnců a několik jelenů a mezků, bažanti, koroptve a zajíci. 1835
rezavé a liščí, mandarínky, ostralky bělolící...).
Tsar Peter the Great wanted to build the menagerie in the manner
of Versailles, for this reason he got the Menagerie garden in Lower Park
(which should be the basis of future menagerie) create in 1716 - 1717.
The garden was designed by French architect Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le
Blond and German Johan Friedrich Braunstein. At the beginning there were
only swans and rare species of waterfowl. In 1722, Italian architect
Nicola Machetti constructed two aviaries - West and East. Both aviaries
(or bird houses) were same - wooden dodecagonal gazebos with dome and
spire in the middle and copper gilded cages inside. The walls were
covered with tuff, shells of molluscs and slag. The interior walls were
decorated with paintings of mythical hunters - Diana and Actaeon by
French painter Luis Caravaque. In the aviaries there were many species
of birds - mainly small songbirds (nightingales, thrushes, canaries...),
but also parrots and reportedly also hummingbirds...
In time of the reign of Anna Ioannovna, in 1730, a small menagerie (also
called Wild boar menagerie) was set up in the later English park (the
Small menagerie was abolished in the 1770s) and in 1733, also hunting
menagerie, called Yagdgarten (from German Jagdgarten ) or Large or Deer
menagerie - at a later Alexandria park. In 1737, the Empress brought
from Izmaylovo menagerie a number of German deer (deer originated from
the Prussian kings) and maral deer, 16 wild goats, 4 wild boars, 1 wolf,
374 hares, 68 mallards and 16 "large sea birds." Empress Anna Ioannovna
was controversial not only in political matters (she was not interested
in the state affairs and de facto German advisers, led by Imperial Count
Bühren, better known as Biron, ruled instead her), but also in
everything else - including the attitude to animals. On one side she was
a lover of animals, established several menageries (animal yards, bird
yards, elephant yard etc.), bred number of animals, but on the other
side, above all, she loved hunting, falconry and animal fights (bears
with wolves and deer with wild boar)... Also the species composition of
the menagerie corresponded with her love for hunting - except already
mentioned, there were elks, hares, polar hares, pheasants, partridges,
grouses, pigeons etc., but also buffaloes, tigers, leopards, wolverines,
arctic foxes, beavers, birds of prey... During her reign also the
aviaries flourished - Anna Ioannovna bought or gave to capture hundreds
if not thousands of nightingales, goldfinches, chaffinches, bullfinches,
siskins, buntings and other songbirds.
On the contrary the hunting was not at all important for Catherine II.
Greatly reduced the number of animals, only a few tame deer, roe deer
etc. remained. In 1742, she brought also white deer. Emperor Nicholas I
was not an avid hunter too. In 1826, he relocated the menagerie to the
English park and then built a pheasantry. 1829, he bought hundreds of
deer (mainly reindeer), but 1834, only 42 roe deer and several deer,
hinnies, pheasants, partridges and hares remained. Animal Yard for
carnivores (bears, wolves, foxes) was built in 1835, but in 1850, the
menagerie was completely abolished. The animals were transported to
Gatchina and Tsarskoe Selo. By that Gatchina became a hunting capital of
Russia, while the menagerie at Tsarskoe Selo was rather for breeding and
for fun.
To date, the Western aviary survived and the Eastern was restored. In
2005, even
breeding of birds was restored - songbirds in western aviary
(chaffinches, goldfinches, hawfinches, siskins, tit birds,
buntings, amadina finches, Java Sparrow, white-headed munias,
waxbills, canaries...), parrots in eastern aviary (macaws,
cockatoos, grey parrots, Amazons, caiques, rosellas,
cockatiels...), and waterfowl in Menagerie and Swan Pond (swans,
Canada geese, white-fronted geese, ruddy and common shelducks,
mandarine ducks, white-cheeked pintails...).
