- Complexul Muzeal de Ştiinţe ale Naturii (Natural Sciences
Museum Complex)
Having an
institutional tradition of half a century, with an excellent material
basis and a pluridisciplinary structure, The Natural Sciences Museum
Complex in Constanţa is considered an important reference for the
cultural and scientific image of the municipality, with a high
emblematic value in the summer offer of the Romanian seacoast. The
Institution’s development in time, the need for a continuously
diversified public offer, the city’s very alert rhythm of growing,
brought about the occurrence and functional development of two
placements, each one observing different domains of the educational act,
that is: the stylish building of the Aquarium, open to the public in
1958 after the renovation of the old building on the esplanade of the
sea in the proximity of the Casino. This institution was renewed several
times, the last one in 2007, offering a real modern appearance. The
Museum Complex is placed on the west side of the Soveja market, on
Mamaia Blvd, in the NE part of the town. Consists of a sequence of
buildings, the complex is build between the years 1972 – 1973 and
modernized during the years 2006 - 2007. In thus generous space there
can be found: th Microdelta, Dolphinarium, Planetarium, The Astronomic
Observatory and a Permanent exhibition of exotic birds.
The Park of the Complex
is an excellent recreation area, with alleys and benches placed among
the trees and plant arrangements, all forming a mini dendrology with
native and alien species. The Micro-reservation area has a body of water
surrounded by willows and swamp vegetation, a piece of lacustrine
ecosystem. With a staff of curators with higher education, among which
three PhDs and two doctoral students, the institution is carrying out
training educational programmers, being established as a reference for
higher education in Constanta, but also for the other universities in
the country. The curators of the institution also developed, in parallel
with the museum, research programmers, activity that through the
communicated and published work has ensured national and international
recognition. These activities entangled institutional or individual
participation to a series of organisms and professional organizations,
among which we enumerate: Romanian Society of Ichtyology; Romanian
Society of Ornithology; National Committee Oceanography; Romanian
National Association of Museum Specialists in Natural Sciences; Romanian
Federation of Zoo Gardens and Aquariums; Balkan Environmental
Association; European Association for Marine Animals Protection. On a
professional level has been developed bilateral collaboration with
Aquarium in Varna/Bulgaria, the Institute of Zoology in Chisinau /
Moldova and Beijing/PR China Aquarium; was promoted to operate in
Constanta, in addition to the Natural Science Museum Complex, an
International Office for natural science sponsored by the Balkan
Environmental association (BENA / Thessaloniki). The specialists of the
complex are permanently concerned with breeding and diversifying the
patrimony which has at the moment over 30.000 exhibits, representing:
mollusks, crustaceans, fish, birds and mammals. In this purpose have
been established collaboration relations with numerous similar
institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa.
AQUARIUM
Aquarium - Constanţa, the first
section of the Natural Sciences Museum Complex, located on the seafront
promenade Casino, in its immediate vicinity, is the first public
aquarium in Romania and was inaugurated on the May 1, 1958.
The building that houses
it was build at the beginning of the XX century, needed complete
rearrangement, because it had a different destination before 1950. The
Aquarium in Constanta remained the biggest institution of its kind in
the country, even after other natural science museums have established
departments with the same profile. The exhibition space is marked out for
the presentation of the permanent aquatic flora and fauna exhibition in
57 tanks, and also for the temporary exhibitions with aquatic biological
and ecological themes. An inedited museum institution for natural
sciences in our country due to its exhibition patrimony made up entirely
of living organisms, the aquarium in Constanta also has naturalized
collections of marine and fresh water fish and invertebrates belonging
to different geographical areas of the Earth. To facilitate the
presentation of aquatic life and the visitors’ access to information,
the exhibition patrimony consists of over 100 species (1300 exemplars)
aquatic creatures and is structured into several sections. The
distribution of aquatic organisms into sections is based on ecological
and bio-geographical criteria, and within the sections the taxonomic
criteria was taken into account for placing the different species into
the tanks.
The marine section
This section includes
species of fish and invertebrates from the Black Sea and Mediterranean
migrants. This is the largest and most representative section of the
Aquarium, both in capacity and importance of species in the tanks
presented. The largest tank (30 m3) includes the biggest collection of
sturgeons famous for its scientific importance and for the longevity of
the exemplars in captivity (18-20 years). In this section are presented
four species of sturgeons (Beluga, Starry sturgeon, Danube sturgeon and
Sterlet), that are ponto-caspian relicts, some exemplars exceeding
150-180 cm size.
The non-economic species are
also interesting for the visitors, being less known, such as: common
stingray, black scorpion fish, greater weever, peacock wrasse, sea
horse, deep-snoted pipefish, pipefish, rusty blenny, butterfly-blenny,
etc.A special attraction for the public visitors is the presence of the
reef tank with clown fish, surgeon fish, azure and white ladies and sea
urchin.

and costal lakes on the seacoast and the Danube Delta waters. Predator
