- Complexul Muzeal de Ştiinţe ale Naturii (Natural Sciences
Museum Complex)
Having an
institutional tradition of half a century, with an excellent material
basis and a pluridisciplinary structure, The Natural Sciences Museum
Complex in Constanţa is considered an important reference for the
cultural and scientific image of the municipality, with a high
emblematic value in the summer offer of the Romanian seacoast. The
Institution’s development in time, the need for a continuously
diversified public offer, the city’s very alert rhythm of growing,
brought about the occurrence and functional development of two
placements, each one observing different domains of the educational act,
that is: the stylish building of the Aquarium, open to the public in
1958 after the renovation of the old building on the esplanade of the
sea in the proximity of the Casino. This institution was renewed several
times, the last one in 2007, offering a real modern appearance. The
Museum Complex is placed on the west side of the Soveja market, on
Mamaia Blvd, in the NE part of the town. Consists of a sequence of
buildings, the complex is build between the years 1972 – 1973 and
modernized during the years 2006 - 2007. In thus generous space there
can be found: th Microdelta, Dolphinarium, Planetarium, The Astronomic
Observatory and a Permanent exhibition of exotic birds.
The Park of the Complex
is an excellent recreation area, with alleys and benches placed among
the trees and plant arrangements, all forming a mini dendrology with
native and alien species. The Micro-reservation area has a body of water
surrounded by willows and swamp vegetation, a piece of lacustrine
ecosystem. With a staff of curators with higher education, among which
three PhDs and two doctoral students, the institution is carrying out
training educational programmers, being established as a reference for
higher education in Constanta, but also for the other universities in
the country. The curators of the institution also developed, in parallel
with the museum, research programmers, activity that through the
communicated and published work has ensured national and international
recognition. These activities entangled institutional or individual
participation to a series of organisms and professional organizations,
among which we enumerate: Romanian Society of Ichtyology; Romanian
Society of Ornithology; National Committee Oceanography; Romanian
National Association of Museum Specialists in Natural Sciences; Romanian
Federation of Zoo Gardens and Aquariums; Balkan Environmental
Association; European Association for Marine Animals Protection. On a
professional level has been developed bilateral collaboration with
Aquarium in Varna/Bulgaria, the Institute of Zoology in Chisinau /
Moldova and Beijing/PR China Aquarium; was promoted to operate in
Constanta, in addition to the Natural Science Museum Complex, an
International Office for natural science sponsored by the Balkan
Environmental association (BENA / Thessaloniki). The specialists of the
complex are permanently concerned with breeding and diversifying the
patrimony which has at the moment over 30.000 exhibits, representing:
mollusks, crustaceans, fish, birds and mammals. In this purpose have
been established collaboration relations with numerous similar
institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa.
DOLPHINARIUM
The Dolphinarium in Constanţa
began its activity on June 1, 1972, being the first museum form of this
kind in our country and the first one in the S-E of Europe at that time.
The exhibition presents the world of the shell fish living in diverse
seas. The shows are organized in the amphitheatre with a pool, with
dolphins from the Phocaena relicta species and Delphinus delphis
ponticus species, with seals from the South Atlantic.
In the Black sea live
three species of dolphins, that is: the sea hog, the common dolphin and
the bottle-nose dolphin. The Dophinaium in Constanta hosted in its pools
all the three species of a dolphin from the Black sea. The first were
the porpoise (Phocoena phocoena relicta) and the common dolphins (Delphinus
delphis ponticus), and about 20 years ago were brought the aphalina or big dolphins as this species is called
Tursiops truncatus ponticus, from which Mark, the veteran and star of the
Dolphinarium until 2009.
Since 1995, the
Dolphinarium has new stars: two exemplars of sea lions (Otaria byronia)
John and Lorry, originating from the coasts of South American. Recently,
in 2010, the Dolphinarium bought three young bottle nose dolphins (Tursiops
truncatus) from Beijing Aquarium, the collaborating institution. The
three specimens, one male and two female, were trained in the first two
months after arrival, a Romanian-Chinese joint team.
At the moment their
program is followed and continuously diversified by a Romanian team of
coaches, most of them having a higher education. Through the shows
carried out, through the guides and activities of ecologic education
carried out, the museum biologists are trying to share with the visitors
a part of their knowledge accumulated after the study and working hours
with the dolphins and the sea lion. Organizing symposia, sessions of
scientific communication with the specialists in the country and abroad
contribute to maintaining the current level of knowledge in the field.
The diverse actions dedicated to the Black Sea Days, The Dolphin’s Week
and others are realized in partnership with the schools, high schools,
NGOs and media representatives, for a better awareness towards the
preservation aspects and environmental protection. Numerous exhibitions
of various themes, diagrams and other exceptional museum forms are our
specialists’ permanent concern.
