CMSN - Complexul Muzeal de Ştiinţe ale Naturii (Natural Sciences Museum Complex)
Having an institutional tradition of half a century, with an excellent material basis and a pluridisciplinary structure, The Natural Sciences Museum Complex in Constanţa is considered an important reference for the cultural and scientific image of the municipality, with a high emblematic value in the summer offer of the Romanian seacoast. The Institution’s development in time, the need for a continuously diversified public offer, the city’s very alert rhythm of growing, brought about the occurrence and functional development of two placements, each one observing different domains of the educational act, that is: the stylish building of the Aquarium, open to the public in 1958 after the renovation of the old building on the esplanade of the sea in the proximity of the Casino. This institution was renewed several times, the last one in 2007, offering a real modern appearance. The Museum Complex is placed on the west side of the Soveja market, on Mamaia Blvd, in the NE part of the town. Consists of a sequence of buildings, the complex is build between the years 1972 – 1973 and modernized during the years 2006 - 2007. In thus generous space there can be found: th Microdelta, Dolphinarium, Planetarium, The Astronomic Observatory and a Permanent exhibition of exotic birds.
The Park of the Complex is an excellent recreation area, with alleys and benches placed among the trees and plant arrangements, all forming a mini dendrology with native and alien species. The Micro-reservation area has a body of water surrounded by willows and swamp vegetation, a piece of lacustrine ecosystem. With a staff of curators with higher education, among which three PhDs and two doctoral students, the institution is carrying out training educational programmers, being established as a reference for higher education in Constanta, but also for the other universities in the country. The curators of the institution also developed, in parallel with the museum, research programmers, activity that through the communicated and published work has ensured national and international recognition. These activities entangled institutional or individual participation to a series of organisms and professional organizations, among which we enumerate: Romanian Society of Ichtyology; Romanian Society of Ornithology; National Committee Oceanography; Romanian National Association of Museum Specialists in Natural Sciences; Romanian Federation of Zoo Gardens and Aquariums; Balkan Environmental Association; European Association for Marine Animals Protection. On a professional level has been developed bilateral collaboration with Aquarium in Varna/Bulgaria, the Institute of Zoology in Chisinau / Moldova and Beijing/PR China Aquarium; was promoted to operate in Constanta, in addition to the Natural Science Museum Complex, an International Office for natural science sponsored by the Balkan Environmental association (BENA / Thessaloniki). The specialists of the complex are permanently concerned with breeding and diversifying the patrimony which has at the moment over 30.000 exhibits, representing: mollusks, crustaceans, fish, birds and mammals. In this purpose have been established collaboration relations with numerous similar institutions in Europe, Asia and Africa.

MICRORESERVE
Within the Natural Sciences Museum Complex in Constanţa, starting with the year 1985 a Micro-reservation entered the public circuit, spreading on a 6 ha surface out of which 2 ha represent  luster water with a swamp vegetation. This objective was created with a view to offer the visitors a more complex image on the Dobrogea’s nature.
The patrimony of this objective has the aquatic avifauna (pelicans, swans, ducks and wild geese), the terrestrial avifauna (peacocks, pheasants) and mammals (mouflons, fallow deer, harts), that can be found in the Danube Delta’s Biosphere Reservation and the Negureni Reservation. Most part of these exemplars are natural monuments and rare species with a scarce representation in the natural biotopes. Some exemplars were obtained by exchange with the other Zoo Gardens and others were purchased or donated. Each year the reproduction and breeding in captivity of numerous exemplars belonging to a variety of species were realized (mouflons, fallow deer). In 2010 was brought from Dorici / Bulgaria a Przewalski's horse. Within the Micro-reservation can be found, in a special natural setting, a number of 46 species with more than 170 exemplars.
All these "guests" benefit from "accommodation spaces" according to the European standards, the present tendency being to eliminate the concrete platforms and surrounding metal bars. At the moment, this section is in full modernization and continuous activity of breeding and diversification of species. This natural setting is meant to become not only a worth visiting area, but also a relaxing and recreational one, for leisure time in a most educative and pleasant way. During the summer season, on the natural lake within the Micro-reservation the pelican colonies and gracefully floating swans can be admired. During the cold season, all the avifauna exemplars benefit from heated shelters.
Beside this recreation and relaxation aspect, also visits organized for the pupils and students take place in order to complete the information in biology with the help of our specialists’ assistance. At the same time, the active commitment in volunteering, enable the animal admirers to participate in their assisted feeding with the specific diet for each species. In this department has initiated a rescue center for housing and quarantine of the specimens made by individuals, especially in the cold season.
