původně malá zoo (vedená Sekcí komunální správy lidové radnice hlavního města - Secțiunea gospodăriei Comunale din cadrul Sfatul popular al Capitalei), rozptýlená v několika Bukurešťských parcích - Cișmigiu, Herăstrău, Carol I a Pădurea Băneasa. Během prvních 4 let se zvířata začala stěhovat právě do Lesa Băneasa a v květnu 1959 zde byla veřejnosti otevřena nová Bukurešťská Zoo.
Po vstupu Rumunska do EU byla zoo ve velmi špatném stavu, nesplňovala moderní standardy chovu zvířat a byla zařazena na seznam 18ti zoologických zahrad (ze 46ti), které měly být zrušeny. Nakonec se podařilo zoo zachránit a zmodernizovat. Dnes množství zvířat např.: šelmy (lvi, tygři, jaguáři, pumy, rysi, malé kočky, vlci, medvědi, ženetky, nosáli, kynkažu, skunci, surikaty...), primáti (šimpanzi, paviáni, kočkodani, makaci, mandrilové, lemuři, kosmani, tamaríni...), jeleni, antilopy, lamy, mufloni, klokani, vakoveverky, mary, dikobrazi, pštrosi, emu, nandu, papoušci, tukani, vousáci, turaka, sovy, dravci, pelikáni, plameňáci, kormoráni, čápi, vrubozobí, bažanti, krokodýli, hadi, ještěrky, želvy, žáby, ryby, vodní bezobratlí, měkkýši, štíři, pavouci, domácí zvířata...

originally a small zoo (managed by the Section of Municipal Administration of the People's City Hall of the Capital - Secțiunea gospodăriei Comunale cadrul Sfatul popular din al Capitalei), scattered in several parks of Bucharest - Cișmigiu, Herăstrău, Carol I a Pădurea Băneasa. During the first 4 years, the animals began to move just into Băneasa Forest and in May 1959 there was new Bucharest Zoo opened to the public.
After the accession of Romania to the EU, the zoo was in very poor condition, did not meet modern standards of animal breeding and was included on a list of 18 zoos (of 46), which should be abolished. At last it managed to save and modernize the zoo. Today a number of animals - beasts of prey (lions, tigers, jaguars, cougars, lynxes, small cats, wolves, bears, genets, coatis, kinkajous, skunks, meerkats...), primates (chimpanzees, baboons, guernons, macaques, mandrills , lemurs, marmosets, tamarins...), deer, antelope, llamas, moufflons, wallabies, gliders, maras, porcupines, ostriches, emus, rheas, parrots, toucans, barbets, turacos, owls, raptors, pelicans, flamingos, cormorants , storks, waterfowls, pheasants, crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, fish, aquatic invertebrates, molluscs, scorpions, spiders, domestic animals...
