The Aquarium Piran - Pirano was built in 1964. The aquarists’ association of the Slovenian Coast started with the renovation of the old building near Ribiški trg (the Fishing Square) which used to be the Maritime and Fishing High School and it has a sight of the internal harbour.
          The Aquarium was fully revived in 1967 when it was taken over by the Secondary Maritime School as a teaching laboratory and fishing workshops, located in the same building.  It consisted of 25 containers with the total volume 12 m3. The Aquarium was working on the simple principle: the water (the volume of 3 m3-cubic metres) was pumped from the sea into the tank installed in the attic.  The water came from the upper tank using gravitation through the water supply system into the tanks below. The surplus of water went back to the sea.
          This method of operation (open system) had a few disadvantages:
• Lack of current in the tanks
• In the summer time the pumped water was too hot and so it wasn't rich with oxygen
• In the winter it was too cold
• The pipes of the sea water system were often clogged because of various organisms
          Despite having these problems the Aquarium was working successfully. It was well known in Slovenia as well as in other countries, because of its diverse and interesting collection of organisms from the local sea. For many years there were two remarkable and hardworking people employed, Mr. Zvonimir Kralj, who took care of the Aquarium so it could work flawlessly and Ms. Bolanča Ankica, who was the cashier. The aquarium was then open only in the tourist season.
          In the 90's, time began to wear away the rooms, equipment and other installations. The management of the Aquarium and PTIC had an idea to restore the aquarium to its original state. After years and years of preparations and negotiations, in 2008, the first reconstructions started. On the 12th of October 2009 the Aquarium got its new image that we can see today.

         L'Aquarium Piran-Pirano, costituito  nel 1964, quando l'Associazione degli operatori degli acquari della Slovenia ricevette il permesso per la ristrutturazione degli ambienti della precedente Scuola nautica, inizio' propriamente l'attivita' nel 1967, quando fu affidato all'amministrazione della Scuola media nautica di Portorose. 
          Disponeva di 25 vasche del volume  di 12m3 litri. Il principio di funzionamento dell'acquario era molto semplice: l'acqua veniva estratta dal mare con una pompa ed era portata in un recipiente del volume di 3 m3 collocato nel sottotetto. Da lì scendeva nelle vasche attraverso i tubi dell'impianto idrico. L'eccesso dell'acqua fuoriusciva  nel mare.
          Questo sistema aveva  alcuni diffetti:
• Mancanza di corrente nelle vasche
• Nei mesi estivi l'acqua era troppo calda e povera di ossigeno
• Durante l'inverno l'acqua era troppo fredda
• I tubi dell'impanto idrico erano spesso intasati con vari organismi
           L'Acquario era molto conosciuto nell'ambito locale e anche internazionale grazie a un vasta colezione di esemplari degli organismo marini, provenienti dal mare locale. La dirigenza e la cura dell'acquario era affidata per lunghi anni al signor Zvonimir Kralj.  Alla cassa c'era la vivacissima signora Anica Bolanča. L'acquario era aperto solo nei mesi estivi.
          Negli anni Novanta l'edificio e tutti i suoi impianti erano già molto consumati perciò la direzione dell'Acquario e della Scuoa media nautica ha deciso di procedere ai preparativi per la  ristrutturazione. I lavori sono cominciati nel 2008, dopo anni di accordi e sono terminati il 12 ottobre 2009.
