Jaká lokace je použitá v databázi
What location is used in the database

2) v některých případech a u některých zemí není k dispozici relevantní mapa ani přesné údaje

především různé internetové mapy a geografické portály, (Google, Wikimapia, Openstreetmap, City Population, Seznam, Mapcarta, Traveling Luck World Index, Yandex, Bing, MapQuest, různé národní mapy jednotlivých zemí), úřední stránky měst, krajů apod. a encyklopedie (Wikipedie, různé regionální a národní encyklopedie) a také oficiální stránky zoo.

For location the database usually uses city or village (in some cases also non-self-governing - see below) - including various equivalents in different languages and different systems of administrative divisions. However this rule can not be applied always, so here is written all exception.

click for display / hide rest of the text

Why the city or village can not be used always?

1) In some cases, the zoo is located outside the city, sometimes very far away from towns or villages
2) in some cases and in some countries there is no relevant map or accurate data
3) the system of administrative division of the countries is not uniform and often vary widely. Sometimes it is vastly different from the one we know from Europe or America. (A very complicated situation is especially in Asia). Town or village may mean something else in some countries. Many languages know the city as only one unit (e.g. most Slavic languages - město, gorod etc.), many others identify these as the two units (eg. city and town in the English). Many European countries have villages for example with only 200 inhabitants, while in Ingushetia there exists village with 65,000, in USA with 55,000... Furthermore, some villages are independent or self-governing, others are part of towns or so on. In every country there are different customs of using names for referring the location.

Why the name of the zoo sometimes does not match the name of the location?
1) large city nearby is often used in the name, although the zoo is located, for example in the neighboring village (eg. Cape Town Lion Park is actually located far from Cape Town, near Stellenbosch).
2) in the name of zoo often is not used name of the city, but for exmply only a city quarter or the like. (eg. Tama Zoo in Tokyo)
3) sometimes the zoo is more often called differently than the official name (eg. Giza Zoo is located in Giza, but abroad is often called the Cairo Zoo)
4) The geography is changing still, cities are merged or renamed, but name of the zoo is not always adapts to these changes (eg. Leningrad Zoo in St. Petersburg)

Why and when also non-independent villages (which are not self-governing)?
For accuracy improvement - only in cases of non-independent villages, which are geographically separated and distant from the municipality to which it belongs (ie. geographically isolated, but not administratively) and only those villages whose names are commonly used instead of the name of the superordinate municipality (they are mostly previously independent villages). Moreover often is impossible to find out whether the village is independent or not.

What sources were used for determination the location?
especially various Internet maps and geographic portals (Google, Wikimapia, OpenStreetMap City Population, Seznam, Mapcarta, Traveling Luck World Index, Yandex, Bing, MapQuest, different national maps of individual countries), the official website of cities, counties etc. and encyclopaedias (Wikipedia, the various regional and national encyclopedias) and the official websites of the zoos.

What does it based from?
from the physical location of the zoo:
1) land register of municipality where the zoo is located
2) near which the town the zoo is located (if it is not in any land register or if the data about cadastral districts are not known) - in this case it is not indicative the distance as the crow flies, but by the roads (taking into a transport accessibility - from where)

The system of administrative units of South Korea is significantly different than for example in Europe and also differs in continental part and in Jeju island. Korean system has several levels, but only two highest (in mainland), resp. one (in Jeju island) are self-governing. All administrative units are according to population, so their status changes. In the database there is used way usual in Korea.
          1) mainland: in the title there is written si (city) or gun (county) and all location is mentioned below the title (in case of cities, only when it regards to town or township, not borough). See the clearly simplified layout below (blue units are used in the title, red in note below the title).

          2) Jeju Island: only province (do) is self-governing in Jeju. County (gun) nor districts (gu) doesn't exist, s in title there is written si (city), eup (town) or myeon (township) and all location is mentioned below the title (in case of eup and myeon). See the clearly simplified layout below (blue units are used in the title, red in note below the title).

V okolí velkých měst vznikají souvislé aglomerace, kde není zřejmé, kde město začíná a končí (to je téměř celé jižní a západní pobřeží).

Barbados is officially divided only into a parishes, in which are several official (independent) cities, towns and villages, but also countless non-independent settlements and hamlets whose names are commonly used in Barbados. In the vicinity of large cities there continuous conurbation are formed, where it is not clear where the city begins and ends (that is almost the entire southern and western coasts). It is impossible find out what place formally belongs where, so all names common in Barbados are used in the database.

          1) Willemstad: the capital rapidly expands and absorbs formerly separate villages, according to some data it already occupies about a third of the island, information about what is and is part of Willemstad and what not is very different, as well as maps. For indication of place, the original names (regardless of whether the localities are part of the city) are still used in the island. In the database, central districts are indicated as Willemstad, localities on the outskirts of the city (where it is not clear whether they belongs to the city) are listed separately.
          2) the rest of territory: cities and villages, alternatively parts of cities, because in Curaçao, there is not clear what is separate settlement and what part of city or another settlement

Parts of districts are city (ciudad), town (pueblo), village (barrio), settlements (poblado). However barrio can be also city quarter and quite often lies in the territories of two districts. Costa Ricans usually (but not always) used district for locating.

      • Portoriko • Puerto Rico (US)

Existují snahy změnit administrativní systém Portorika - snížit počet municipií a posílit administrativní význam některých barrios (tzn. udělat z některých barrií samostatné obce).
          2) Municipio Ponce: barrios Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, Quinto, Sexto, San Antón, Canas Urbano, Machuelo Abajo, Magueyes Urbano a Portugués Urbano - jako Ponce (městské čtvrti), ostatní samostatně

Puerto Rico has a very strange and different administrative structure - the first level of administrative unit (provinces, regions...) completely missing, unit of the second level is called municipio (plural municipios) - although literally the city, in fact it rather corresponds to the county, it is also the only self-governing unit. Municipio is further divided into barrios (singular barrio), what is equivalent to towns, villages and also city quarter, district or neighborhoods, where can not distinguish whether the barrio is part of a town or rather village (non-independent). Exception are Barrios called Pueblo, it is always the downtown of the municipio capital. Each barrio has no administrative significance. Barrios are further divided into sectors (some also to subbarrios), but this is not essential.
There are efforts to change the administrative system of Puerto Rico - reduce the number of municipios and strengthen an administrative importance of some barrios (that means to make separate villages from some barrios).
          1) Municipio San Juan: all as San Juan (the whole municipio is the capital - all barrios have statute of city district only)
          2) Municipio Ponce: barrios Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, Quinto, Sexto, San Antón, Canas Urbano, Machuelo Abajo, Magueyes Urbano and Portugués Urbano - as Ponce (city quarters), the others separately
          3) the rest of territory: theoretically barrio marked as Pueblo is the city and the other barrios are villages, practically it is not used, so that in the database there is used municipio in the title (literally municipality, de facto county), under the title there is written also barrio
