Nguuni
Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated approximately 5 km’s inland from the North and South
Quarries of Baobab farm, Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the wider
Nguu Tatu area. Nguuni is a spectacular wildlife sanctuary with a real
"Out of Africa" feel to it - tall grass, soft hills and scattered stands
of Acacia and Doum palms, with their big yellow Leopard orchids, dot the
landscape. This area of Baobab Farm has only recently been opened up to
the public so could be regarded as one of the best kept secrets of
Mombasa ..... for the moment .....
Ostrich
Farm
It was in 1995 that a group of approxmiately 100 sub-adult
Maasai Ostriches were introduced into this area to further diversify the
utilisation of the Nguuni land reserve. Guests are able to wander
between the ostrich pens, glean fascinating information about ostrich
farming, breeding and rearing and even be able to hand-feed the birds.
It is a most interesting and informative experience. Expert guides are
on hand to answer all your questions. Presently there are about 85 adult
ostriches with about 50 hatchling. Over 200 eggs were laid in the year
2000.
Almost all parts of an ostrich can be utilised - from the
meat, eggs and empty egg-shells to the skin and feathers, all adding to
the overall self-sustaining philosophy of Baobab Farm. All these
products are available for sale within the farm. The meat forms part of
the menu of the Whistling Pine Restaurant in Haller Park and is also
sold to other restaurants on the Mombasa coast and sometimes ever as far
as Nairobi.
Eland
& Oryx Farm
Currently, there are a number of Eland and Oryx herds around
Baobab Farm. These graceful creatures have become relatively
domesticated thus allowing the visitor a rare close up view and
fantastic photo opporunity. There is a herd at Nguuni, which visitors
can see in the evenings as they return to their night boma after their
day out in the pastures of Nguu Tatu, and there is another domesticated
herd in and around Haller Park. There are approximately 76 Eland and 112
Oryx as at December 2001. The main purpose of their introduction into
Nguuni and Baobab Farm is for land utilisation and also for the
distribution of seeds through their droppings which helps with the
rehabilitation process.
Eland and Oryx meat is sold in the Baobab Farm shop and also
features on the menu at the Whistling Pine Restaurant.
BBQ
and Sundowners
Sundowner drinks and BBQ dinners at Nguuni are offered as
part of a number of tours that make up the Baobab Adventure, or as a
"stand-alone" evening experience.
The Whistling Pine restaurant in Haller Park caters for BBQ
dinners and sundowners with snacks. These take form of awesome game meat
BBQ's and snacks using produce from Baobab Farm, such as fried coconut
pieces, cassava chips, quail eggs and coconut milk cocktails. Guests are
able to watch the sun set behind the Nguu Tatu hills whilst the
domesticated Eland and Oryx herds are brought right past the boma to
their enclosure for the night - a real mini-safari break right here on
the coast ! Anything from a party of 4 to 30 can be catered for.
Specialised Tour
There are endless opportunities for specialised tours around
the Nguuni area. The area is famous for its superb birdlife and overall
scenic beauty which inevitably lends itself to awesome adventures and
unique experiences. Birding tours are offered to the ornothological
enthusiast or beginner, champagne breakfasts can be arranged on the
edges of one of many small lakes and walking tours are encouraged with
trained guides leading the visitor to many largely unexplored areas of
Nguu Tatu. Depending on the size of the group, any requirements can be
considered."
Wildlife
Nguuni is also famous for its rich birdlife, with many
migratory species making stop-overs here. Over 260 species of birds have
been recorded. On request, Ornithological tours are conducted in the
area.
